No. You need to be genuinely good at the thing you want to teach — the formal term is “vocational competency”, usually shown through your industry experience and often a relevant qualification. You don’t need a degree, and you don’t need to already work for a training organisation. The TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is how you gain the teaching side.

The TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is designed for around 12 months at roughly 4-6 hours a week. With relevant background and more time, 6 months is realistic at 8-10 hours a week. Ignore anyone promising 2 weeks — it isn’t real, and it’s a sign of a provider selling speed over substance.

Early in the course you deliver a few short presentation, around 30 minutes each — one to an individual and others to a small group of 2 or 3 people. Later in the course you will deliver a presentation to 5 people. Most participants use family, friends or willing volunteers – not people from their workplace. This is the part people fear most but once you deliver that first short presentation, the nerves tend to fall away fast.

Yes. Under the current ASQA standards (effective from July 2025), you can begin teaching at a TAFE or RTO while completing your qualification. You’ll need to be enrolled, making genuine progress, and working under the supervision of a qualified trainer and assessor.

This means you can deliver training and contribute to assessment activities, while the final assessment sign-off remains with your supervising trainer until you complete your qualification.

Many TAFEs advertise casual teaching rates of more than $100 per hour. You have up to two years to complete your qualification and must continue making genuine progress throughout that time to remain eligible to teach under supervision.

To begin the enrolment process, all you need to pay upfront is the $165 enrolment fee. The remaining course fees are payable once your enrolment is confirmed.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and credit transfer are often confused, but they’re quite different.

Credit transfer is free. It recognises units you’ve already completed that can be credited when you have a valid Statement of Attainment.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment of skills and experience that haven’t been formally recognised. Your experience is assessed against the requirements of the current unit of competency, using a specific criteria set by ASQA.

It’s not required for the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Some people complete it first to build confidence, while others go straight into the qualification. The choice is yours.
